Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D., Mich.) introduced a five-page bill to codify limits on the Pentagon’s use of artificial intelligence, including bans on autonomous lethal targeting, mass surveillance of Americans, and AI involvement in launching or detonating nuclear weapons. The proposal follows a public rift between the Defense Department and AI firm Anthropic, which was designated a supply-chain risk after the Trump administration ordered agencies to stop using its models; Anthropic has sued over the move. Slotkin argues that enshrining existing Defense Department guidelines into law would avert policy reversals and costly contractor disruptions as the military expands AI use. The measure, which currently lacks co-sponsors, is intended to shape debate ahead of the year-end National Defense Authorization Act. The fight underscores growing pressure on Congress to set guardrails for battlefield AI while preserving operational benefits.
