Meta rolled out an image-generation tool, Muse AI, that can produce realistic depictions of people using public Instagram photos as source material, including celebrities and public figures, according to NBC News. The system does not require explicit consent from individuals whose images are used, and Meta’s detection tools do not consistently flag the resulting content.
The move is likely to sharpen debate over privacy, intellectual-property rights and misinformation risks tied to synthetic media. Regulators and lawmakers may press platforms to strengthen provenance, labeling and consent mechanisms as public figures and brands assess reputational exposure from unauthorized likenesses online.
