Research shows AI is reshaping older Americans’ career paths — and why it matters

Artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape the careers of older Americans, with new research from Boston College’s Center for Retirement Research finding higher job exit rates among workers 55 and over in AI-exposed roles following the launch of ChatGPT. Economist Geoffrey Sanzenbacher attributes the trend to three forces: displacement from automation, voluntary exits or retirements spurred by pressure to adopt new tools, and, conversely, productivity gains that could extend working lives. Using Tufts University’s Digital Planet AI-exposure metrics and Current Population Survey data, the study shows white-collar, higher-earning, college-educated workers—such as web developers, database architects, programmers, and data scientists—face the greatest exposure, while many physically intensive roles are less affected. The shift could narrow career-length gaps between high- and low-wage occupations, complicating debates over raising the retirement age as Social Security’s finances tighten. The findings suggest higher earners may face larger benefit cuts, even as their jobs evolve under AI. Advisers urge older professionals to build AI literacy and emphasize soft skills—communication, judgment, leadership—to stay competitive. Surveys from AARP and others show older workers view AI as both risk and opportunity, with adoption rates still lagging younger cohorts.
