NIST Director Arvind Raman will serve as acting chief as the White House advances a June executive order seeking voluntary disclosure of models and a rapid-build evaluation framework. The departure adds to uncertainty following the earlier exit of David Sacks as the administration’s AI and crypto czar. The shuffle comes as Chinese open-source models gain ground and Washington stands up a “Gold Eagle” clearinghouse to vet access to cutting-edge systems, moves that have already influenced rollouts by OpenAI and Anthropic.
