Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei pushed back against claims that his warnings about artificial intelligence have fueled a U.S. backlash, arguing the controversy stems from a broader crisis of trust in corporations, government and the tech industry. Investor Gavin Baker criticized Amodei for emphasizing AI risks and said such messaging has spurred opposition to data centers and regulation. Amodei countered that his public statements have balanced risks with benefits and that skepticism persists because AI companies have yet to deliver tangible, widely felt gains. He defended targeted guardrails—such as transparency measures in California—and rejected what he called a false choice between laissez-faire deployment and regulation that entrenches incumbents. Anthropic’s policy stance, he said, aims to slow frontier developers while advantaging smaller competitors, acknowledging AI’s structural tendency to concentrate power. Amodei argued that “open-weights” models help but don’t solve resource-driven consolidation, and he urged “rules of the road” to mitigate cyber, bio and alignment risks. Winning over the public, he added, will depend less on marketing than on demonstrable breakthroughs.
