OpenAI economist says AI will boost demand for ‘care economy’ roles as job tasks shift

OpenAI’s chief economist, Ronnie Chatterji, says artificial intelligence is already changing how work gets done, shifting tasks across roles even as headline job losses remain muted. He expects broader productivity gains from AI to take 18 to 24 months to show up in official statistics. Chatterji sees growing demand in the “care economy” and other person-to-person services that are harder to automate, while knowledge workers increasingly use AI to perform tasks once handed to colleagues. The near-term story, he suggests, is less about unemployment spikes and more about quiet reconfiguration of workflows and skills inside U.S. companies.
