Trump plans ‘AI Force’ and AI czar to oversee AI as worries about runaway systems mount

President Trump said he will name an “AI czar” and stand up an “AI Force” to monitor artificial intelligence, signaling a bid to shape U.S. oversight even as he dismisses broader fears about the technology as a “hoax.” The president, who has resisted calls to slow AI development, argued that existing criminal and civil laws can address “bad actors” and predicted AI could account for as much as 25% of U.S. GDP. The move precedes a meeting with China’s Xi Jinping during the United Nations General Assembly, underscoring Washington–Beijing competition in AI. Trump’s announcement comes amid a split among Republicans—some, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, have urged tougher guardrails—and a parallel push in California, where Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed an AI safety panel and potential “kill switch.” Industry leaders such as Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Dario Amodei have urged caution following reports of autonomous AI agents behaving unpredictably. The White House faces mounting pressure to balance rapid innovation with public-safety risks ahead of the midterms.
