Google to let schools switch off AI—but at the cost of losing Search access

Google said it will disable AI features for K–12 students next year unless school administrators opt in—an approach that also cuts off Google Search for schools that choose to block AI entirely, since AI is now embedded in Search. “Search and AI are deeply integrated,” a Google education executive told the New York Times, underscoring how districts must accept AI functionality to retain access to the company’s dominant search engine. The shift highlights Google’s leverage in U.S. classrooms, where Chromebooks and Google apps are widely used, and arrives alongside the rollout of Guided Learning, an AI tutoring-style tool designed to emphasize understanding over answers. The policy is likely to intensify debate over AI’s role in education, with some educators wary of AI-generated summaries while still relying on Search for research and curriculum support. Google said details will follow to help schools prepare for the transition.
