Duolingo has announced that it will become an “AI-first” company, according to CEO Luis von Ahn. The move means Duolingo will gradually phase out human contractors for any jobs that can be automated by artificial intelligence. The shift aims to accelerate content creation, improve productivity, and remove workflow bottlenecks, allowing employees to focus on creative work and complex problem-solving. AI adoption will also become a consideration in hiring and performance reviews, and new hires will only occur if tasks cannot be automated. Duolingo says the changes are designed to help scale educational content to more learners quickly while supporting existing employees with new AI tools and training.
