Reddit, at its 20th anniversary, finds itself at the intersection of AI evolution and data protection. With over 108 million daily users generating valuable content, Reddit faces a threat from AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini, which train on enormous internet datasets, sometimes without permission. Recently, Reddit sued Anthropic for allegedly scraping user-generated content, arguing unfair business practices, rather than focusing on copyright infringement. This suit highlights the shifting legal and commercial landscape surrounding AI’s use of online data. Simultaneously, Reddit has launched its own Reddit Answers AI, leveraging its archive to provide chatbot responses based solely on Reddit content. Though AI poses challenges to acquiring new users, Reddit’s leadership believes its original discussions continue to offer a unique value proposition, both for users and advertisers, in an increasingly AI-driven web.
