Facebook, operated by Meta, has introduced a new AI-powered feature that prompts users to upload photos from their camera rolls—even those not previously shared on the platform—to generate story ideas and collages. The opt-in feature, initially available in the US and Canada, uploads the photos to Meta’s cloud for AI analysis based on time, location, or themes, though Meta asserts these suggestions are private and not used for ad targeting. Despite these assurances, privacy advocates are concerned about how long the data is stored, how it may be used, and exposure to new risks such as facial recognition. The rollout comes amid broader global debates over AI, data privacy, and regulation, highlighted by cases involving DeepSeek and OpenAI, and reflects the growing tension between AI-driven convenience and personal privacy.
