The European Commission announced it will proceed as scheduled with the implementation of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, disregarding requests from tech companies for a delay over concerns of cost and regulatory complexity. The AI Act, which took effect in August 2024, sets deadlines for compliance: general-purpose AI requirements by August 2025 and high-risk model obligations by August 2026. Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier emphasized there will be no pauses or grace periods, though some regulatory guidance and support initiatives will be made available to help companies adapt. The Act establishes the world’s first comprehensive AI regulatory framework, positioning Europe as a leader in responsible AI governance.
