A new study by Common Sense Media reveals that while nearly three-quarters of U.S. teenagers have used AI tools like Replika and Character.AI to flirt, chat, or seek advice, the majority still favor human interaction. The research highlights both the appeal and potential dangers of AI companions, with a third of teens confiding serious matters to these digital friends and a similar proportion finding AI as satisfying—or more so—than real conversations. Despite these trends, 80% of teens say they prioritize real-life friendships, though risks of data sharing, addictive behaviors, and uncomfortable experiences persist. Experts warn that AI companions are not designed with teen well-being as a priority and recommend caution in their use, underscoring ongoing concerns about youth, technology, and mental health.
