The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded contract funding of up to $200 million each to leading artificial intelligence companies Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI, aiming to accelerate the military’s adoption of advanced AI solutions. According to the DoD’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, these awards are intended to address critical national security challenges through innovative AI agents operating across multiple mission areas. Among the efforts highlighted, xAI announced a government-ready version of its Grok platform following controversy over its chatbot’s output, while OpenAI has launched tailor-made services for federal clients and maintains ongoing partnerships to deploy advanced AI systems for defense. The move illustrates the Pentagon’s escalating emphasis on harnessing private-sector AI expertise to reinforce its technological and strategic advantages.
