In a major move to bolster national security technology, the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded contracts worth up to $200 million to leading artificial intelligence firms Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI. The funding, managed by the DoD’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, is aimed at accelerating the department’s adoption of cutting-edge AI tools in support of military objectives and safeguarding strategic advantages. The companies will develop AI agents and solutions across multiple mission areas. Notably, xAI, led by Elon Musk, introduced government-specific AI offerings, further signaling Silicon Valley’s deepening ties with defense initiatives. OpenAI, which previously secured a $200 million DoD contract, is continuing its expansion into the government sector with new products tailored for federal, state, and local agencies.
