Unknown actors leveraged cutting-edge artificial intelligence to mimic the voice of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reaching out to at least five high-level officials, including foreign ministers and a U.S. governor, the State Department disclosed. Using convincing AI-generated messages via platforms like Signal and spoofed display names, the perpetrators sought to extract sensitive information or gain account access. While no direct breach was reported, the campaign highlights increasing cybersecurity threats posed by generative AI and voice cloning technology. The incident follows similar attempts to impersonate senior U.S. officials, prompting ongoing investigations by federal agencies amid rising concerns over disinformation and digital identity fraud within government ranks.
