Microsoft has significantly increased its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, recruiting around two dozen AI specialists from Google DeepMind, according to people familiar with the matter. High-profile moves include former DeepMind leaders and engineers—such as Amar Subramanya, Adam Sadovsky, Sonal Gupta, and Jonas Rothfuss—joining Microsoft AI under Mustafa Suleyman, a DeepMind co-founder and now Microsoft’s AI chief. The strategic hires are aimed at bolstering consumer products like Copilot and Bing as competition with Google and Meta intensifies. Tech giants have escalated efforts to attract top AI talent, with some offering multimillion-dollar incentives, signaling an escalating arms race as the industry pivots toward generative AI.
