Six leading Senate Democrats have issued a public call for President Trump to reconsider his recent move allowing U.S. chipmakers Nvidia and AMD to sell advanced artificial intelligence semiconductors to China in exchange for a 15% government revenue cut from such sales. Their open letter, prompted by Trump’s August 11 announcement, warns that the deal could undermine U.S. national security by relinquishing America’s technological edge in advanced AI chips—potentially bolstering China’s military capabilities, despite denials from Nvidia. While the Trump administration dismissed the criticism as politically motivated, Chinese authorities have reportedly ordered tech giants to suspend purchases of U.S. chips pending a security review, indicating ongoing friction and uncertainty in the global AI chip market.
