In a new interview, Bill Gates said artificial intelligence is advancing quickly enough to replace humans in simpler tasks, including basic coding, but remains short of handling the most complex programming. The Microsoft co-founder noted experts are split on whether AI will close that gap within a couple of years or closer to a decade, while emphasizing the technology’s faster-than-expected progress. Gates highlighted likely near-term disruption in white-collar roles such as telesales and support, framing AI as a productivity boost that could free workers for higher-value activities if transitions are well managed. He added that blue-collar impacts will grow as robotics improve. Gates, who is working with Microsoft and OpenAI, urged ensuring access for low-income countries across health, education, and agriculture, and distinguished today’s systems from full artificial general intelligence.
