OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank unveiled plans to build five new U.S. AI data centers under the $500 billion “Stargate” initiative, adding sites in Texas, New Mexico, Ohio and an undisclosed Midwestern location. The expansion, which includes an Oracle-OpenAI buildout in Abilene, would lift Stargate’s capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts and push committed investment past $400 billion over three years, toward a 10-gigawatt target. The companies expect about 25,000 onsite jobs. The move follows Nvidia’s plan to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and supply chips, as AI leaders race to secure compute. People familiar said partners will lean on debt financing to lease chips. Microsoft, an OpenAI backer, and rivals are spending heavily on data centers to support services such as ChatGPT and Copilot, while Washington’s strategic focus and China’s catch-up push intensify the industry’s urgency.
