Former Cisco CEO John Chambers warned that artificial intelligence will upend corporate America at a pace far faster than the internet era, predicting that as many as 50% of Fortune 500 companies—and half of their executives—could disappear. Comparing today’s AI surge to the dot-com boom and bust he navigated at Cisco, Chambers said AI is moving five times faster and could deliver triple the impact. The acceleration, he cautioned, will destroy jobs more quickly than new ones are created, particularly at the entry level, necessitating large-scale re-skilling efforts by governments and business. While he sees substantial productivity and growth upside if companies reinvest gains, Chambers argued that only organizations capable of continual reinvention will survive. Leaders who fail to convert AI into durable competitive advantage, he said, face a “train wreck” in what he called the most uncertain business climate of his career.
