The National Republican Senatorial Committee posted a 30-second attack ad that uses an AI-generated video of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer repeatedly saying, “Every day gets better for us,” a phrase he told Punchbowl News about the government shutdown. The spot, shared on X and YouTube, includes small “AI GENERATED” and synthetic-content labels but drew swift criticism from journalists and researchers who said fabricating video of a political opponent crosses a line—even if the words are accurate. Digital forensics expert Hany Farid argued that clearer disclosures are needed and warned that normalizing deepfakes risks eroding trust in authentic content. The NRSC defended the ad as a visualization of Schumer’s remarks. The episode underscores the rapid spread of AI tools in U.S. politics, growing platform rules around altered media, and concerns that increasingly realistic fakes could shape voter perceptions heading into future campaigns.
