The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into Google’s AI-generated “Overview” summaries and other conversational search features, probing whether the company used website and YouTube content to train its models without offering appropriate compensation or a meaningful opt-out. Regulators also want to know if creators had control over how their videos informed Google’s broader AI systems, escalating Europe’s scrutiny of Big Tech under its tough digital rulebook. Publishers fear the feature siphons traffic and ad revenue—one outlet cited a roughly 50% drop in clicks since launch—while creator groups say Google is forcing them to accept AI training terms to remain visible online. Google said the probe risks stifling innovation in a highly competitive market and pledged to keep working with news and creative industries. EU officials say AI’s benefits must not come at the expense of media plurality and creators’ rights, signaling potential penalties if rules are found to be breached.
