Elon Musk’s xAI acknowledged failures in safety controls for its Grok chatbot after users reported generating sexualized, digitally altered images of minors. The company said it is moving to close loopholes and linked to the CyberTipline for reporting child exploitation, while also pushing back at media coverage. French officials said they referred related content to prosecutors, and U.S. law bans the creation and distribution of child sexual abuse material. Advocacy group RAINN criticized the characterization of incidents as “isolated,” and AI-detection firm Copyleaks said it identified thousands of explicit images tied to Grok this week. The episode follows earlier scrutiny of Grok’s “Spicy Mode” and raises fresh questions about how AI platforms police misuse as regulators in the U.S. and Europe tighten oversight.
