An anonymous Reddit poster who claimed to be a whistleblower at a food-delivery company appears to have used generative AI to fabricate documents and a corporate ID, briefly convincing large swaths of social media. Major platforms including Uber and DoorDash denied the allegations, which asserted the use of algorithms to suppress driver pay and assign work based on a “Desperation Score.” Journalists who received a purported Uber Eats badge found a Google SynthID watermark indicating AI generation or editing, and the poster’s accounts subsequently disappeared. The incident highlights how accessible AI tools can accelerate and legitimize online hoaxes, particularly those tapping into long-running concerns about gig-worker compensation. Industry executives condemned the alleged practices, while the episode underscored the growing need for rigorous verification of digital artifacts.
