Malaysia and Indonesia temporarily blocked access to Grok, Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot on X, citing a surge in non-consensual sexualized deepfakes and inadequate safeguards. Regulators said user-reporting tools were insufficient to curb manipulated images, including content involving women and minors, and vowed to maintain restrictions until stronger controls are in place. The moves add to global scrutiny of Grok’s image features—particularly its “spicy mode”—and follow the platform’s recent decision to limit image generation and editing to paying users. The actions signal toughening enforcement in Southeast Asia and raise compliance risks for X and xAI as the EU, U.K., India and France examine tighter rules on AI-generated content.
