Micron said an AI-driven surge in demand for high-bandwidth memory has deepened a global chip shortage that will persist beyond 2026, straining supply for PCs and smartphones. The memory maker, a key Nvidia supplier, is prioritizing enterprise customers and accelerating expansion, including a $100 billion plant near Syracuse, N.Y., after declaring its AI memory lineup fully booked this year. Chinese handset makers are trimming shipment targets amid rising memory costs, and PC vendors also warned of disruptions. Shares of Micron and rivals SK Hynix and Samsung climbed last year on the AI boom, as the industry shifts capacity toward HBM used in AI accelerators.
