Amazon said it will cut about 16,000 roles as part of an effort to flatten management, reduce bureaucracy and accelerate investment in artificial intelligence. Most U.S. employees affected will have 90 days to seek internal roles, with severance for those who don’t transition. The move accompanies a grocery realignment: expanding same-day delivery, opening more than 100 stores in coming years and converting or closing Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh locations in favor of Whole Foods. Executives stressed the cuts aren’t intended to recur and hiring will continue in strategic areas. The shake-up comes as Jeff Bezos backs a well-funded AI startup, underscoring Big Tech’s escalating race to invest in AI.
