A 72-year-old Boulder man was arrested after investigators alleged he used generative artificial intelligence to create sexually exploitative images of children from real photos. The probe began when PicsArt alerted the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about explicit content tied to an account, prompting a forensic review by Boulder County authorities. A Jan. 15 search warrant led to the seizure of devices, and the suspect later surrendered on a $50,000 cash surety bond. He faces 11 counts each of producing and possessing child sexual exploitation material, plus a sentence enhancer for crimes involving a child under 12. Officials said the case is among the county lab’s first full investigations involving generative AI and underscores growing concerns about the technology’s misuse.
