A New York State Supreme Court judge overturned Adelphi University’s disciplinary action against student Orion Newby, finding insufficient basis for a professor’s determination—made with an AI-detection app—that his paper was AI-generated. The ruling orders the university to expunge Newby’s record and has been characterized by legal experts as a landmark for student due process amid the rapid adoption of AI tools on campus. Newby, who received support from school tutors through a program for students with learning and neurological disorders, said the accusation devastated him before the court’s decision cleared his name. Adelphi said it is reviewing the decision, as educators and attorneys warn that current AI-detection technologies remain unreliable for high-stakes academic judgments.
