In response to a concerning spike in fatal collisions, Somerset authorities are set to trial artificial intelligence cameras on the A361 Frome Bypass, a stretch of road that has seen six deaths in five years. The technology, capable of detecting mobile phone usage, seatbelt violations, and other forms of reckless driving, forms part of a broader initiative by Avon and Somerset Police in partnership with Somerset Council to enhance road safety. With over 50 deaths reported in road incidents across the region last year, officials and local representatives underscore the urgent need for innovative deterrents. While not a panacea, proponents hope the AI rollout will complement recent junction upgrades and contribute significantly to reducing the risk on one of the county’s most hazardous routes.
