A Concord, Calif., mother said she wiped out nearly $2,000 in unexpected hospital charges after using an AI tool to navigate an appeal with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Lauren Gonzalves received the bill two years after giving birth, despite having paid her out-of-pocket maximum during the 2021 stay, and said multiple appeals initially failed as the claim shifted from her name to a billing alias for her son. Turning to Counterforce Health’s AI “Agent Maxwell,” she was guided to argue that Anthem may have violated its own timeliness rules and to assemble supporting documentation. Anthem subsequently dropped the charges in early August, she said. Counterforce CEO Neal Shah, who founded the free platform after battling denials during his wife’s cancer treatment, said few consumers appeal insurance decisions even though about half who do typically prevail. The case underscores growing tension over insurers’ automated review systems and a budding market of AI tools aimed at helping patients contest denials.
