In a recent incident highlighting the escalating threat of AI-driven fraud, an unidentified actor used artificial intelligence to convincingly impersonate US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Utilizing sophisticated voice cloning and crafted text messages on the messaging app Signal, the scammer targeted at least five high-profile individuals, including foreign ministers, a US governor, and a member of Congress. According to an internal state department cable, the objective was to access sensitive information or accounts, underscoring the mounting challenges posed by AI in government security. The incident, reminiscent of a previous episode involving a bogus White House official, prompted renewed calls from figures such as David Axelrod for robust defenses against such technological abuses. Federal authorities have launched an investigation, but details remain closely guarded as the government reviews its cybersecurity posture.
