The Risks of Taking Medical Advice From AI

Many Americans today are turning to artificial intelligence for health advice. On the surface, the reasons appear obvious. Healthcare in the United States is prohibitively expensive. Families live with the constant fear of surprise medical bills. Even a short hospital stay can bankrupt a household. Faced with these risks, many people are drawn to AI because it is free, fast, and marketed as efficient. Why pay hundreds of dollars for a doctor’s visit when a chatbot promises an instant answer at no cost. Yet what makes medicine different from other sciences is not data or efficiency but the human relationship of care. Numbers and algorithms can describe illness, but healing requires compassion, presence, and trust.

This shift toward AI is fueled not only by economic pressures but also by the hype surrounding technology. Companies have poured billions into marketing tools that appear to mimic expertise. Investors, executives, and consultants benefit from inflating the value of AI companies, and their claims often find a receptive audience in the media. The narrative is seductive. AI never sleeps, learns faster than humans, and can analyze vast amounts of data instantly. It is no wonder that many Americans, disillusioned with a healthcare system that feels broken, are turning to these tools for guidance.

The problem is that this perception is not only misleading, it is dangerous. AI tools are not doctors. They cannot understand pain, fear, or anxiety. They cannot look at a patient’s face, notice hesitation in a voice, or interpret the unspoken signs of distress. They rely only on statistical patterns in data, not on lived experience with patients. A spreadsheet can suggest probabilities, but it cannot hold a hand or explain a frightening diagnosis in plain words. When people mistake the fluency of an AI generated answer for truth, the result can be harmful.

Healthcare costs in the United States are staggering compared with most developed nations. A simple emergency room visit can cost more than a month’s rent. An ambulance ride, even with insurance, can result in bills of several thousand dollars. Families live in fear that an unexpected accident or illness will wipe out their savings.

In this environment, AI tools present themselves as a tempting alternative. A parent worried about a child’s fever might hesitate before going to urgent care, knowing the bill could be hundreds of dollars. Typing symptoms into an AI powered chatbot feels like a low risk first step. A young adult struggling with anxiety may avoid therapy because of cost, turning instead to a free app that offers reassuring words generated by a machine.

The attraction is not only financial but also practical. The American healthcare system is fragmented and slow. Patients often wait weeks for an appointment with a specialist. Insurance networks are confusing. Bills arrive months after treatment, with charges no one can explain. In contrast, AI offers immediacy. It promises answers at the speed of conversation. For people trapped in a system that feels hostile and opaque, the appeal is obvious. But the speed of answers is not the same as the presence of care.

AI is not capable of delivering medical care. It produces fluent answers, but fluency is not understanding. AI does not reason, interpret, or empathize. It processes words, pictures, or sounds as zeros and ones, compares those numbers to patterns it has seen before, and generates outputs that sound plausible. To the human ear, the results may resemble intelligence. But they are statistical matches, not genuine comprehension. Medicine requires listening, noticing, and interpreting. These cannot be reduced to data points.

Consider the case of health anxiety. I have a family member who often convinces herself she has a serious disease after reading online sources. A simple headache, she fears, could mean a brain tumor. A momentary chest flutter might be interpreted as heart failure. These fears are fueled not by medical evidence but by anxiety. When she consults a physician, the doctor can draw on experience with real patients to distinguish between symptoms worth testing and fears that require reassurance. An AI tool, by contrast, would likely reinforce her belief. Given a list of symptoms, it may generate a response that includes rare conditions, phrased with the authority of certainty. Instead of calming her, it could intensify her fear.

This is not a minor issue. Millions of Americans struggle with health related anxiety. For them, the wrong advice is not neutral, it deepens suffering. AI cannot weigh the psychological and emotional dimensions of illness. It cannot consider family history, mental state, or the broader context of a person’s life. It cannot sense hesitation, or ask the follow up questions that good doctors instinctively pose. By reducing illness to patterns in data, AI strips away the very factors that make each patient unique.

One of the most dangerous aspects of AI in healthcare is the illusion of certainty. A human doctor may admit uncertainty, explaining the limits of current knowledge. An AI system rarely does so with the same nuance. Instead, it delivers answers with the authority of a textbook, even when those answers are wrong. Patients, unfamiliar with how AI works, may assume that because the response is well phrased it must be correct. Yet computers do not understand language or meaning. They only calculate the probability that one word should follow another.

In medicine, confidence without comprehension is a recipe for disaster. A chatbot may recommend a treatment that sounds plausible but is contraindicated for a particular patient. It may overlook subtle warning signs that an experienced physician would recognize immediately. Unlike a doctor, it cannot weigh trade offs between physical risks and psychological needs. It cannot consider the ethical dimensions of care.

If AI tools harm people, public trust will collapse. We have already seen how quickly confidence in technology can erode after high profile failures. Social media, once hailed as a force for democracy, is now viewed by many as a driver of misinformation and division. If AI is associated with life threatening medical mistakes, its promise in other domains will be tarnished as well.

The future of AI will depend not only on its technical potential but on whether society draws boundaries around its use. Healthcare is one of those boundaries. Errors here are not minor inconveniences. They carry life or death consequences. A wrong restaurant recommendation is a nuisance. A wrong cancer diagnosis is a tragedy. If AI companies push too aggressively into healthcare without safeguards, they may poison the well for their own industry.

The roots of this problem run deeper than AI itself. They lie in the structure of the American healthcare system. Unlike in France, where healthcare is treated as a public service, the United States has built a system that prioritizes profit over patients. Lobbyists spend billions to preserve a model that inflates costs and resists reform. Hospitals are pressured to keep beds full. Pharmaceutical companies push expensive drugs when cheaper alternatives exist. Patients are encouraged to undergo unnecessary surgeries or treatments.

In such a system, it is not surprising that many Americans place more trust in AI than in the institutions meant to protect them. They see a doctor’s office as a place of billing codes and surprise charges rather than care. They view insurance companies as adversaries rather than partners. Against this backdrop, a chatbot that offers free, nonjudgmental answers feels like relief.

But this relief is an illusion. AI is not a safe alternative to a broken system. It cannot replace trained physicians, nor can it navigate the complexity of human illness. Turning to it out of desperation may only compound harm.

Another force pushing Americans toward AI is the competition among AI companies themselves. These firms are locked in a race for survival, with only a few likely to dominate. To attract investment, they exaggerate what their tools can do. Marketing materials describe systems as near human in their abilities, downplaying limitations and risks. Investors reward bold claims. Journalists, eager for dramatic headlines, amplify them. The result is a cycle of hype that convinces the public that AI is more capable than it truly is.

The consequences of these exaggerations are serious. Desperate Americans, already skeptical of the healthcare system, may gamble with their health on tools that are not capable of providing care. Parents may delay taking a sick child to the hospital because an AI system told them it was unnecessary. Older adults may adjust medications based on chatbot advice rather than physician supervision. Each of these decisions carries the potential for harm.

The broader cost is the erosion of trust. If AI is seen as dangerous or deceptive, people will turn away from it entirely. That would be a loss, because AI does have valuable roles to play in healthcare, analyzing medical images, identifying patterns in large datasets, or helping manage administrative burdens. But those roles must be carefully defined. When companies blur the line between assistance and substitution, they put both patients and the future of their industry at risk.

What is needed now is honesty, about the limits of AI, the failures of the healthcare system, and the real risks patients face. AI can support medicine, but it cannot replace it. It can augment human judgment, but it cannot provide care on its own. Policymakers must establish clear regulations that prevent companies from marketing these tools as substitutes for physicians. Medical boards and professional associations must educate patients about the difference between information and advice, between guidance and care.

At the same time, the healthcare system itself must be reformed so that patients do not feel forced to turn to AI out of desperation. This means controlling costs, increasing transparency, and treating healthcare as a service rather than a marketplace. Only when people can trust that seeking medical help will not ruin them financially will they stop relying on unqualified alternatives.

The story of AI in healthcare is not simply about technology. It is about trust, desperation, and the failures of a system that puts profit above patients. Americans are turning to AI because they cannot afford doctors, because they are frustrated by bureaucracy, and because they are seduced by hype. But AI is not care. It cannot feel, empathize, or truly understand. It cannot weigh the complexity of human lives.

If society allows AI to overstep in healthcare, the results will be predictable: personal harm, shattered trust, and disillusionment with technology itself. If, however, we treat AI as a tool, limited but useful, powerful but not human, then it may still find a place in medicine without endangering lives.

The choice is not between AI and doctors. It is between hype and honesty. True healing will always depend on care, not data. And it is a choice we must make now, before too many Americans place their health in the hands of a machine that cannot care.
