AI-powered “nudify” apps that generate sexualized images from ordinary photos are proliferating on mainstream app stores, raising urgent safety concerns as students return to school. A CBS News review of 70 AI photo-editing apps found 19 that produced explicit content from images of fully clothed adults in under a minute. Common Sense Media reports roughly half of U.S. teens have seen AI-generated pornography, with a quarter saying it featured themselves or someone they know; a fifth admit to making such content. Apple and Google said they have removed or rejected many offending apps and emphasized policies prohibiting sexual content, though several titles were still accessible to teens before takedowns. School districts are training staff to spot AI-enabled exploitation, and advocates urge stronger vetting by app stores alongside clear school policies and open parent–child dialogue. Experts recommend immediate reporting to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline to coordinate removals and law enforcement action.
