Artificial intelligence continues to reshape the U.S. job market, with its footprint expanding far beyond the technology sector. According to a Lightcast study analyzing 1.3 billion job postings, AI-fueled automation is accelerating layoffs in tech giants such as Microsoft, which recently cut 15,000 jobs, while heavily investing in AI infrastructure. At the same time, demand for AI skills outside of technology—from marketing and finance to education and manufacturing—has driven up salaries by an average of $18,000 per year, a 28% premium over comparable roles. The data reveal a sharp decline in the proportion of AI jobs within IT while showcasing explosive, cross-industry adoption of generative AI platforms. The labor market is thus splitting: tech roles are shrinking, but broader sectors benefit from AI skills, fundamentally transforming the hiring landscape.
