The UK government has granted £2.6 million to support the development and trial of AI technology designed to boost efficiency and welfare on egg farms. Developed by Oxford’s FAI Farms, in partnership with The Lakes Free Range Egg Company and Newcastle University, the Flockwise system uses sensors and AI to monitor hen behavior and welfare by analyzing environmental data and the sounds birds make. The government hopes this will improve animal welfare, increase egg production, and lower prices for British shoppers. If widely implemented, the project could generate up to 1.7 billion more eggs annually and increase farmers’ income by £280 million, while reducing the environmental impact by enhancing the longevity and health of poultry.
