Alphabet is restructuring its AI ranks, moving DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis from day-to-day leadership to chair of DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet to focus on long-term strategy and scientific breakthroughs, including work at Isomorphic Labs. Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over operational leadership of DeepMind, including oversight of the Gemini family of models, while longtime executive Jeff Dean is departing after nearly three decades. The shake-up comes amid heightened competition from Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta, ongoing talent defections, and anticipation for a delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro release. Alphabet shares fell about 4% Wednesday on the news.
