The BBC has threatened US-based AI firm Perplexity with legal action over the alleged unauthorised use of its content by the company’s chatbot, claiming copyright infringement and violation of its terms of use. The BBC demanded an immediate halt to use, deletion of retained content, and financial compensation. Perplexity has countered, claiming the BBC is supporting Google’s monopoly. The case highlights ongoing concerns about AI firms using copyrighted materials without permission, the inadequacy of current web-scraping protections like robots.txt, and growing calls from publishers and creative industries for stronger legal safeguards. Industry associations argue such practices threaten the UK’s publishing sector, while the wider debate centers on how AI models access and use online information.
