Bill Gates has stated that artificial intelligence (AI) is set to revolutionize two major professions—teaching and medicine—by helping address chronic worker shortages. Speaking on the “People by WTF” podcast, Gates said AI’s growing capabilities could ultimately end the need for more doctors and teachers, alleviating workforce gaps in places like the US, India, and Africa. Startups in healthcare are already leveraging AI to reduce burnout by automating tasks and improving diagnosis, while education sectors are piloting AI tools to supplement or replace traditional teaching roles. Gates also predicts that physical labor jobs could be automated with advances in robotics. These shifts will require society to rethink the nature of work, with the possibility of shorter workweeks or earlier retirements becoming a reality as technology continues to improve productivity and efficiency.
