Business Insider has announced significant layoffs, reducing its workforce by 21% as part of a major restructuring to focus on artificial intelligence-driven journalism. CEO Barbara Peng outlined the shift towards AI-powered products, increased original reporting, and the phasing out of most of the company’s commerce business. The move comes as 70% of staff currently use Enterprise ChatGPT, with ambitions for full adoption. The layoffs, criticized by the Insider Union and The NewsGuild of New York as prioritizing profit over journalism, are said to impact all departments. Owned by German publisher Axel Springer, Business Insider aims to increase efficiency and innovation through expanded AI integration, despite union pushback and industry concerns.
