More than 200 economists and AI researchers, including 16 Nobel laureates, warned that artificial intelligence could reshape the economy more quickly than the Industrial Revolution, bringing large-scale job displacement alongside potential gains in living standards. In a brief open letter organized by Stanford University’s Digital Economy Lab, signatories—among them computer scientists and executives from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI—called for incentives, guardrails and new institutions to steer AI in ways that complement workers. The group urged policymakers and business leaders to prepare now for rapid change. AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio said societies must make deliberate, democratic choices rather than leave outcomes to market forces that could leave many behind.
