The FBI has issued a warning about a new wave of cyberattacks in which scammers use artificial intelligence to create fake voice messages impersonating senior U.S. officials. These AI-generated memos, part of a “vishing” scheme, are used alongside text messages to trick both current and former government officials and their contacts into giving up access to personal or government accounts. The ultimate aim is to leverage stolen information to reach additional targets or acquire sensitive information or money. The announcement follows an increase in AI-driven financial fraud and highlights how top cybercrimes in 2024—including phishing, extortion, and data breaches—have resulted in billions in losses, particularly among older Americans. The FBI advises skepticism toward unsolicited messages, even those that appear to come from trustworthy sources.
