A new study examined the effects of generative AI on teamwork by embedding AI into product development processes at Procter & Gamble. It found that individuals using generative AI could match the performance of traditional two-person teams working without AI, both in quality and the likelihood of generating high-performing product ideas. AI also helped dissolve traditional knowledge silos, enabling employees to suggest effective solutions outside their main areas of expertise, and allowed less experienced workers to match veterans. While the study suggests that AI can function as a valuable “teammate” by boosting productivity and collaboration, other research shows that human-AI teaming does not always outperform humans or AI alone, due to trust and coordination issues. The results suggest companies may need to rethink how teams are formed and how expertise is leveraged in the workplace.
