Germany’s Berlin data protection authority has asked Apple and Google to review and potentially block the DeepSeek AI app over claims that it sends German users’ data to China in violation of the EU’s strict data privacy laws (GDPR). The commissioner asserts that DeepSeek cannot sufficiently ensure EU-level protection of personal data when transferring information to China, where authorities have broad access rights. If acted upon, this could set a precedent for a wider EU ban on the app, especially as Apple and Google dominate app distribution. The issue underscores ongoing EU scrutiny of AI and foreign apps, following earlier actions by Italy and Ireland against DeepSeek.
