Google is preparing to allow children under 13 to use its Gemini AI apps on Android devices that are managed through Family Link parental controls. Parents are being notified about the upcoming feature, which will enable kids to get homework help or stories read to them. Google assures parents that children’s data will not be used to train its AI and has provided guidelines to help kids understand that Gemini is not human and not to share sensitive information. Parents retain the ability to turn off Gemini for their children, and Google will send an additional notification the first time a child accesses the app. The move comes alongside ongoing concerns about the safety, accuracy, and appropriateness of AI interactions for children, and follows reports of issues with other AI bots providing inappropriate or misleading content to young users.
