The United Nations named 40 nominees to an Independent International Scientific Panel to assess the societal and economic impacts of artificial intelligence, with the General Assembly set to decide membership on Feb. 12. Secretary-General António Guterres warned AI is “moving at the speed of light” and called for shared guardrails to curb risks while fostering innovation. The panel—independent but supported by the UN—will conduct “deep dives” into areas such as health, energy and education, and aims to deliver its first report by July. The slate includes 19 women and 21 men, among them LSE professor Sonia Livingstone, IIT Madras AI head Balaraman Ravindran and Nobel laureate journalist Maria Ressa, as the UN seeks consensus amid geopolitical strains.
