The UK’s HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has confirmed it employs artificial intelligence (AI) to sift through social media accounts as part of criminal investigations into suspected tax offenders, in a bid to enhance efficiency and target fraud more effectively. While officials emphasize that AI supports rather than replaces human oversight—and stress its use is governed by legal review—experts caution the approach risks errors, including misidentification stemming from hacked or fraudulent accounts. The initiative, which the agency asserts will not result in job losses but will free up employees for frontline work, arrives amid scrutiny over the government’s broader AI strategy. HMRC also plans further AI-driven enhancements to simplify taxpayer interactions and improve access to guidance, aiming to reduce errors in returns and increase compliance.
