Google is expanding the use of its artificial-intelligence tools to help governments and international organizations anticipate and respond to natural disasters, coinciding with a new U.N. report on AI-enabled early warning systems. The company’s WeatherNext and Flood Hub models informed forecasts from the U.S. National Hurricane Center and U.N. agencies, enabling Jamaica and Nigerian states to trigger early interventions and cash transfers before floods hit. Google is also distributing public alerts across Search, Maps and Android via Common Alerting Protocol feeds and an Android-based earthquake warning network, while new FireSat satellites aim to speed wildfire detection globally. Post-disaster, AI models developed with partners like UNOSAT and DISHA are rapidly assessing building damage at national scale. The push underscores big tech’s growing role in public-safety infrastructure, as Google open-sources datasets and tools to blend global AI with local data—an approach that could improve accuracy while raising expectations for cross-border data sharing and governance.
