A coalition of over 30 research institutions across Latin America and involving Latino experts in the U.S. is developing LatAmGPT, an artificial intelligence language model designed to reflect the region’s vast linguistic and cultural diversity. Unlike major AI models, which are primarily created by U.S. or Chinese companies and trained mostly in English, LatAmGPT draws on regional archives, Indigenous languages, and local cultural nuances to provide more accurate and representative responses for Latin American and Caribbean users. The initiative aims to incorporate local experiences, support culturally sensitive AI solutions, and inform public policy, with a projected public launch in June. The collaboration also signifies a broader effort to ensure Latin America actively contributes to global advancements in AI while focusing on ethical and inclusive technology.
